Solomon in All His Glory

He asked for wisdom first, and glory followed.

1 Kings 10:14–27, 11:1–8; Matthew 6:29

So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom. 1 Kings 10:23

What is happening

Solomon's wealth is beyond any king's: gold by the shipload, two hundred shields of beaten gold, a throne of ivory overlaid with gold with a lion on each side and twelve lions on its six steps, and silver as common as stones in Jerusalem. But he loved many foreign women, seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines, and "his wives turned away his heart" after other gods. Jesus said that "even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these" lilies (Matthew 6:29).

Why it matters

Solomon had everything, and it did not keep his heart. The story holds the splendour and the warning together.

Scales

  • Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
  • Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
  • Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
