The Greats of the Old Testament
Samson and the Lion
The Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him.
Judges 14:5–6
And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand. Judges 14:6
What is happening
Samson goes down to the vineyards of Timnath. A young lion roars at him. The Spirit of the LORD comes mightily on him, and with no weapon in his hand he tears the lion apart as if it were a young goat. He tells neither his father nor his mother.
Why it matters
Samson's strength was never his own. It came when the Spirit came. The story shows how that gift could be used, and later how it could be lost.
Scales
- Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
- Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
- Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
