Samson and Delilah
Even a fallen champion was lifted, and his strength came back when he turned to God.
Judges 16:4–22
And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. Judges 16:19
What is happening
Samson loves Delilah. The Philistine lords offer her silver to find the secret of his great strength. After she presses him day after day, he tells her that no razor has touched his head, because he is a Nazarite to God. She lets him sleep on her knees and has the seven locks of his hair cut off, and his strength leaves him. He wakes and does not know that "the LORD was departed from him." The Philistines take him, put out his eyes and make him grind in prison. But the hair of his head begins to grow again.
Why it matters
Samson told his secret to the wrong person, and lost what God had given. The last line, that his hair began to grow again, shows that the story is not finished.
Scales
- Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
- Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
- Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
