The Words of Jesus
Peace, Be Still
Peace, be still.
Mark 4:39–40
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
What is happening
Jesus is asleep in the back of a boat when a great storm rises and the waves fill the boat. The frightened disciples wake him.
Why it matters
The storm obeys him. But the question he asks them is about themselves: why are ye so fearful?
Scales
- Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
- Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
- Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
