The Greats of the Old Testament
Moses and the Red Sea
There was no way through, until God made one.
Exodus 14:15–31
And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. Exodus 14:22
What is happening
Israel is trapped between Pharaoh's army and the sea. The LORD tells Moses to lift up his rod and stretch out his hand. A strong east wind blows all night, the sea is divided and the waters stand like walls on both sides. The people walk through on dry ground. When Pharaoh's chariots follow, the waters return. In the morning Israel sees the Egyptians dead on the shore and believes the LORD.
Why it matters
There was no way through, until God made one. The people could only walk, and the way opened as they went.
Scales
- Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
- Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
- Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
