The Greats of the Old Testament
Joseph's Coat of Many Colours
A father's love wrapped in colour, and the dreams that carried Joseph to a palace.
Genesis 37:3–4, 23–28
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. Genesis 37:3
What is happening
Jacob, also called Israel, loves Joseph more than his other sons and makes him a coat of many colours. His brothers hate him and cannot speak to him peaceably. When Joseph comes to them in the field, they strip him of his coat and throw him into an empty pit. A caravan of Ishmeelites passes by, and the brothers sell him for twenty pieces of silver. Joseph is taken down to Egypt.
Why it matters
What looks like the end is the start of a long road. Years later Joseph will say that what his brothers meant for harm, God meant for good (Genesis 50:20).
Scales
- Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
- Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
- Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
