Jonah and the Great Fish

Rescue was already waiting in the deep.

Jonah 1:1–17; Matthew 12:40

Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. Jonah 1:17

What is happening

Jonah runs from God's call and boards a ship, and a great storm comes. He tells the sailors to throw him into the sea so that the storm will stop. They throw him in, and the sea ceases from its raging. "The LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah," and Jonah is in its belly three days and three nights. Jesus later speaks of Jonah "in the whale's belly" as a sign (Matthew 12:40).

Why it matters

Jonah could not run far enough to get away from God. The great fish was waiting for him: what looks like the end of the story was a rescue that had already been prepared.

Scales

  • Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
  • Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
  • Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
