The Greats of the Old Testament
Moses on Mount Sinai
God spoke from the fire, and gave his people a path to walk in.
Exodus 19:16–20, 20:1–17, 31:18
He gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God. Exodus 31:18
What is happening
On the third morning there are thunders and lightnings, a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet. Mount Sinai is covered in smoke because the LORD came down on it in fire, and the whole mountain shakes. The LORD calls Moses up to the top. God speaks all the words of the commandments, and when he finishes he gives Moses two tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
Why it matters
The commandments are given to a people who have just been set free. They are the first words of a relationship, spoken from fire.
Scales
- Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
- Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
- Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
