The Greats of the Old Testament
Daniel in the Lions' Den
He trusted God through the night, and the morning proved it.
Daniel 6:16–23
My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me. Daniel 6:22
What is happening
Daniel keeps praying to God although the king has forbidden it, and he is thrown into a den of lions. A stone is rolled over the mouth of the den and sealed with the king's ring. The king cannot sleep. At first light he runs to the den and calls out. Daniel answers that God sent his angel and shut the lions' mouths. He is lifted out unharmed, "because he believed in his God."
Why it matters
Daniel did not make himself safe. He trusted, and the morning proved it. The story is about a faithfulness that does not change when it costs something, and a night that ends in light.
Scales
- Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
- Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
- Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
