Abraham and Isaac

God will provide: the promise that met Abraham on the mountain.

Genesis 22:1–19

Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God. Genesis 22:12

What is happening

God tests Abraham: he is told to take Isaac, his only son, to Mount Moriah and offer him there. Abraham walks up with Isaac, the wood and the fire. Isaac asks where the lamb is, and Abraham answers, "God will provide himself a lamb." As Abraham stretches out his hand, the angel of the LORD calls from heaven: "Lay not thine hand upon the lad." Abraham sees a ram caught in a thicket by its horns and offers it in his son's place.

Why it matters

Abraham trusted God with the one thing he loved most, and God provided. The place was named "In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen" (22:14).

Scales

  • Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
  • Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
  • Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
