The Transfiguration
His raiment was white as the light.
Matthew 17:1–9 · Mark 9:2–13 · Luke 9:28–36
“This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” Matthew 17:5
What is happening
Jesus climbs a high mountain with Peter, James and John. There his face shines like the sun and his clothes become dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appear and speak with him. A bright cloud covers them, and a voice says: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” The three friends fall on their faces. Jesus touches them and says, “Arise, and be not afraid.” When they lift their eyes, they see no one but Jesus alone.
Why it matters
For one moment the friends of Jesus see who he truly is. Moses stands for the Law and Elijah for the Prophets, and both step aside so that Jesus is left alone. The voice does not say “look”. It says “hear”.
Scales
- Small, 12 × 16 in — More intimate. The work sits within the room rather than leading it.
- Classic, 18 × 24 in — Our natural starting point: present enough to hold the wall, with room to breathe around it.
- Large, 24 × 32 in — More presence across the room. The work becomes a stronger architectural element.
